     George F. Kober, son of József Kober and Mary R. Theis, was born on 31 July 19163,4, or on 30 July 1917 at Bloomington, McLean County, Illinois.6

George married Dorothy K. Leichtenberg on 27 September 1941 at Bloomington.3,4,8,5

George died on 25 January 2013 at Heritage Health, Normal, McLean County, Illinois, at age 96 years, 5 months and 25 days. His obituary read:

NORMAL — George F. Kober, 96, of Normal died at 2:37 a.m. Friday (Jan. 25, 2013) at Heritage Health, Normal.

His funeral will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Epiphany Catholic Church, Normal, with Father Daniel Gifford officiating. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery, Bloomington. Visitation will be from 9 to 10 a.m. Tuesday at the church.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Epiphany Catholic Church Capital Campaign. Carmody-Flynn Williamsburg Funeral Home, Bloomington, is in charge of arrangements.

He was born July 31, 1916, in Bloomington, the son of Joseph and Mary Theis Kober. He married Dorothy K. Leichtenberg on Sept. 27, 1941, in Bloomington. She preceded him in death March 27, 2008.

Surviving are a daughter, Judith (John) Hirsch, Normal; three sons, Stephen (Marjorie) Kober, Edgewood, Wash; Michael (Vicki) Kober, LeRoy; and Lawrence (Karen) Kober, Indianapolis; 13 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife; a daughter, Joan Forman; a sister; and two brothers.

George served with the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s. Upon his return to Bloomington, he was employed as a tool and die maker at Meadows-Thor Corporation. He later worked at General Electric Company and retired from there after more than 25 years of service. He was the only person who achieved a 75-year membership in the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers, an award he received in August 2012.

In addition to his family, George had two particular passions, gardening and the weather. He was a talented gardener who could nurture both flowers and vegetables. His record-keeping of daily weather in the Twin Cities began in 1961 and continued until he could no longer hold a pen.

He was a charter member of Epiphany Catholic Church, where for many years he served as an usher, and he received the Peoria Diocese’s Pere Marquette award for his service. He volunteered for 23 years at Americana Nursing Home on Broadway in Normal, where he also established a vegetable garden for the residents.

George was an avid Cubs fan all his life.3,4

He was buried at St. Joseph Cemetery.3
