Matyas Carolus Hauptmann was born on 18 August 1871 at Pîncota, Arad, Romania.1,10,11,9,8 He was baptized on 20 August 1871 at Pîncota. His godparents were Mathias Veisz and Anna Hauptman, both peasants. He was baptized by Joannes Blaskovits.1 He married Elisabetha Hermele, daughter of Joannes Hermele and Juliana Pfeiffer, on 24 April 1898 at Pîncota. The marriage was performed by Jozsef Nagy. Witnesses were Matyas Klein and Janos Gako, both peasants.2,8,10,4,5,6,7,11
Matyas sailed from Fiume, Croatia, on 22 December 1906. He arrived in New York City on 10 January 1907, at the age of 35 years. Mathias indicated that he had a prepaid ticket to travel on to Bloomington, Illinois, where his brother-in-law Joseph Totterer was awaiting him. He was described as being 5'6" with a dark complexion, dark hair, and yellow eyes.3,8
Matyas filed his first declaration of intent on 22 April 1918 at Bloomington.8
Matyas filed his second Declaration of Intent on 23 May 1936 at Bloomington, McLean County, Illinois.8
Matyas was naturalized on 16 September 1939 at Bloomington.9,8
Mathias died on 17 October 1954 at Bloomington at age 83 years, 1 month and 29 days11, and was buried at River Grove.11
