John Lakatos, 98, of Sand Creek, died early Tuesday morning, December 26, 2017, at Provincial House in Adrian, where he had resided the past two years. Born on St. Patrick’s Day, 1919, in Toledo, OH, he was the son of the late Alex and Rose (Vincze) Lakatos. He married Eva McKown on April 19, 1947, in Blissfield, and she preceded him in death on February 7, 1975.
John enlisted in the United States Army in April of 1941, and served overseas as a Staff Sergeant in the New Guinea and Australian Campaigns during World War II. Upon his honorable discharge in November of 1944, he had earned a Bronze Star, the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Ribbon and the American Defense Service Medal. Following the service, he spent his entire adult life farming, lovingly tending the land. His greatest passion was spending time with his beloved family.
Surviving are his son, John P. Lakatos of Sand Creek; daughter, Mary (Larry) Spurgeon of Albertville, AL; two sisters, Elizabeth Lips of Tecumseh and Anna Bragg of Blissfield; five grandchildren, Lisa (Dennis) Richmond of Lake Wales, FL, Trisa (Mark) Iffland of Palmyra, Kristy (Manuel) Gonzalez of Adrian, Jason Retter of Gadsden, AL and Stacie (Jon) Moore of Horton, AL; nine great-grandchildren; and a great-great granddaughter.
In addition to his parents and wife, John was preceded in death by three brothers, Alex Jr., Joseph, and Paul Lakatos; a sister, Rose Van Brandt; a grandson, Mike Retter; daughter-in-law, Sharon Lakatos; and a special friend, Delsie Maddocks.
The family will receive friends for a visitation on Friday, December 29, 2017, from 4-8 p.m. at the Eagle Funeral Home in Morenci. Military Rites honoring John’s service to his country will be performed by the Fulton County Honor Guard on Saturday, December 30, at 11:00 a.m. at Our Lady of Fatima Cemetery near Lyons.
