Johannes Althusius

     Johannes Althusius was born in 1557 at Diedenshausen, (Siegen-Wittgenstein), (Nordrhein-Westfalen), Heiliges Römisches Reich.^4,2

Johannes enrolled at the Gymnasium Philippinum at Marburg, Hessen-Kassel, Heiliges Römisches Reich, in 1577.² He received his doctorate in civil and canon law in 1586 at the Universität Basel. While there, he also studied theology with Johann Jakob Grynaeus.^4,2 First he taught law at the Herborn Akademie at Herborn, Fürstentum Nassau-Dillenburg, Heiliges Römisches Reich.² From 1592 to 1596, Johannes taught at a Calivinst Academy at Burgsteinfurt, Münster, Westfalen, Heiliges Römisches Reich.²

Johannes married Margaretha Naurath, daughter of Friedrich Naurath and Marie von Cronenburg, in 1596 at Siegen, Grafschaft Nassau-Siegen, Heiliges Römisches Reich. They had three sons and two daughters.^5,2,1,3,6

Johannes died on 12 August 1638 at Emden, (Ostfriesen), Heiliges Römisches Reich, at age 81 years. Johannes was a legal theorist and political philosopher, whose great achievement was the publication Politica and his theory of federalism.²
