Johannes Gehring, son of Johann Daniel Gehring and Anna Margaretha Kochendörfer, was born on 19 January 1711 at Kesselstadt, Main-Kinzig-Kreis, Hessen, Holy Roman Empire (Germany). He was baptized at home in the night. His godfather was Johannes Gehring.1,3 In 1737, Johannes matriculated at the Universität Hanau, where he studied theology.4,14
Johannes married Sara Maria Beyhers, daughter of Philipp Beyhers and Catharina (--?--), on 21 January 1747 at Bleichenbach, Büdingen, Hessen-Darmstadt, Holy Roman Empire (Germany).2,15,16,17,14
Between 1747 and 1750, he came to Ortenberg, Büdingen, Hessen-Darmstadt to replace Pastor Hirzl as evangelical-reformed pastor, and as preceptor.13,4,14,2 He was a pastor at Elm, Schlüchtern, Hessen between 1750 and 1767.3,4,14 Between 1767 and 1789, Johannes was an evangelical-reformed pastor at Dorheim, Friedberg, Hessen-Darmstadt.7,3,4,14,10
Johannes was the godfather of his grandson, Johann Heinrich Gehring at his baptism on 25 August 1784 at Wölfersheim, (Wetteraukreis), Hessen-Darmstadt.18,19
Johannes and his son, Philipp Reinhard Gehring, were involved in a court case which took place between 22 May 1785 and 20 June 1785 at Dorheim. Johannes filed a complaint in court against several young boys, who had left the Nauheim church during a baptism. Johannes declared before court that the boys ran out of the church and that after the sermon, in the rectory he asked the teacher, Johann Marcus Schell Flegel, why the boys had left. The teacher answered that he was afraid to call the boys back, because the parents had previously said that if he were to even touch a child, they would storm his house.
The teacher declared that the boys in question were Christian, 14 years old, and Johannes Fisch, Bernhard Fienitz, and Conrad Hartmann, 12 years old. He said that he hadn't said anything to the boys, but that he did speak with their parents on the following day to say that they should let their children go to the church. The parents were in agreement, and the following Sunday, they were back in church and stayed for the entire time. The teacher said that, yes, he had been threatened, but he didn't know exactly who had threatened him. He worried that if he were to punish the boys, the parents would take them out of the school and send them to the Lutheran school.
The children were asked by the judge why they left the church. They claimed that they had wanted to go to the Lutheran church.
Their parents, Henrich Fienitz, Christoph Hartmann and Henrich Fisch appeared before the court as well and declared that the children were in the wrong to leave the church, and that they had reprimanded them about it.
Next the juryman, Peter Jacobi, was called to the stand. He confirmed that the teacher had visited him at home and talked with him about punishing the children. The children had not wanted to attend the church service, because they did not like the Pastor Philipp Reinhard Gehring. Peter Jacobi advised the teacher not to punish the boys until the conflict between the congregation and the Pastor was over. The court decided that this was nothing but the usual mischief which boys get into, and that they should be punished in school.8
Between 8 August 1787 and 14 September 1787 at Dorheim Johannes again appeared in court, where he filed a complaint against the wife of Conrad Zerb. In the presence of several persons, the wife of Conrad Zerb insulted him and called him a liar. The woman declared before the court, that when she was in her flax field, Johannes came by and talked to her. He said that the children of her daughter, the wife of Heinrich Knorr, met him and behaved rudely towards him. She claims to have asked the children about it, and they assured her that that they answered him that they were going to work in the flax field and didn't say anything inappropriate. She called him a liar, and he then called her uncouth. A witness named Heinrich Eissner confirmed before court that Johannes told him that the two boys, one being Heinrich Knorr replied to his questioning about where they were going with "Just following our noses". Conrad Zerb's wife, who wasn't far away, said this wasn't true, whereupon Johannes answered, "Then I'm a liar". The court decided that the wife of Conrad Zerb must apologize to Johannes.9
Johannes died around 7 p.m. On 17 June 1789 at Dorheim, leaving Sara as a widow.10,3,4,14 He was buried on 20 June 1789 at Dorheim.10
